ISBN: 0634098063
Published: June 1st, 2006
Publisher: Hal Leonard Publising Corporation
Read from September 9th to 26th, 2012
Synopsis from Goodreads:
How did a medium-sized Southern river town become arguably the most important music center in America? In How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A., we learn how a single studio in a tiny duplex house became Music Row, a ten-block area populated by hundreds of talented people whose job is to simply make music. The book features stories from publishers, songwriters and others who help tell the evolution of this fabled center of music. It's where Elvis ushered in the commercial rock 'n' roll explosion by recording "Heartbreak Hotel," Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, and Willie Nelson taught mainstream America to love soulful ballads, and Bob Dylan recorded three of his most important albums. The full-length CD includes 12 recordings made in the early studios of Music Row, giving listeners a rare chance to hear the demos made by some of Nashville's most talented artists. Songs include "Bye, Bye, Love," "Crazy," "King of the Road," "Walkin' After Midnight" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

Review:

Mickey and Poppy

When I first started college about a month and a half ago, I talked a lot about my homesickness in various places online, including here.  As time has gone on my homesickness has got a lot better.  I still miss home sometimes, but I'm enjoying school now and being here at college.  Still, I realized that there was one thing I never really talked about when I was talking about my homesickness.  I mentioned my family and friends quite a lot, but I never really mentioned my pets.

If you follow me pretty much anywhere online, you may have heard me mention my family's two dogs from time to time.  (They've even appeared in a couple of my Youtube videos.)  For those who don't know, my family has two brussels griffons named Mickey and Poppy.  I haven't seen them since August, and I really do miss them.  It wasn't the type of missing them where I really noticed it at first.  When my homesickness was bad, I would sit there crying about being away from family and friends, but I never really thought about the dogs.  Now that my homesickness isn't making me sit in my room and cry anymore, I'm starting to think more about other things I miss, and one of those things is Mickey and Poppy.

They are seriously two of the cutest dogs ever (even though Poppy isn't necessarily the conventional form of cute), and I miss them both a lot.  I can't wait to see them both when I go home in October!

TV Watching Friday

The first half of this week it seemed like I was doing nothing but homework, but then the second half of the week I haven't had much at all.  Now it's Friday night, I've done some homework, and I have some left but I'm leaving that for Saturday and Sunday.  I've spent most of the day since getting out of class watching movies/TV.  I watched Princess Kaiulani (which I reviewed on here earlier), Naruto, and How I Met Your Mother.

One Direction was also on Alan Carr earlier, so I watched that.  It was a great interview.  It was a absolutely hilarious and by far the best interview they've done in a while.  The interview kind of indirectly confirmed that Liam and Danielle broke up though.  Liam looks a bit down the whole interview, and Alan asks Louis and Zayn about their girlfriends, leaving Liam out.  To me that's basically a confirmation that they've broken up wihtout Liam having to directly say it on camera (which he probably doesn't feel like doing at the moment).  I'm actually pretty upset about this.  They were such a cute couple and seemed happy together.  Liam is one of the sweetest people ever and seeing him so down during the interview sucked.

I think most of the rest of my night will be full of watching Youtube videos and reading.  What better way to spend a Friday night?  I started a new book last night, and it's interesting so far.  I'm looking forward to reading more of it!

Movie Review: Princess Kaiulani

It's been a while since I've written a movie review.  Usually when I watch a movie I never even think to review it, but when I was watching Princess Kaiulani earlier I decided I wanted to write a review.

For those of you who have never heard of her, Princess Kaiulani was the last princess of Hawaii.  This movie is about her and the annexation of Hawaii by the United States.  I don't think most people know much about the history of Hawaii.  This movie was very entertaining, and it really teaches you about a very important part of Hawaii's history.  It's also an important part of American history considering it concerns the annexation of Hawaii, but we never really learn much about Hawaii in American history at school.

There was really only one aspect of the movie that bothered me, and that was the romance.  I didn't think it was necessary to focus on it as much as they did.  I'm not sure how much of that part of the movie was true. I don't think there was anything wrong with having it in the movie, but I wish they'd made it a smaller part of the movie.  If you enjoy romance though, then you'll probably enjoy that part of the movie.  I enjoy romance, and I did like that part of the movie, but in the long run I think I would have liked the movie more if the romance had been focused on less.

I definitely recommend watching this movie if you're interested in historical movies.  It's very interesting and focuses on a part of history that you don't really get to hear about often.

Re-Watching the Harry Potter Movies

It's been such a long time since I've watched a Harry Potter movie.  I know that seems like such a random thought, but with The Casual Vacancy coming out today I've been thinking about Harry Potter quite a bit.  I'll admit it probably hasn't been all that long ago that I watched the eighth movie, but it's been at least a year (probably actually about two) since I've seen the earlier movies.  It's kind of ridiculous considering I used to watch all of them at least every few months or so.

It's not because I don't love them just as much as I used to.  I just never think to put them in, and there's always so much going on.  Whenever I do get a chance to watch something, I usually chose something I haven't gotten to see before instead.  I'm getting really sentimental though, and I definitely want to watch the first movie soon.  I only brought the first, seventh, and eighth movies with me to school, and I think I'm going to pull the first movie out soon to watch it.  I have a feeling I'll be extremely sentimental.  While I consider the later movies to be my favorites of the series, I don't think the later movies can ever really compete with the earlier movies in the way the early movies make me feel when I watch them.  The first movie is especially important to me because it's what made me a Harry Potter fan.  I really need to re-watch it soon.  I kind of miss it.

Homework Filled Day

Today has felt like a long day, and I think that's because I got so much accomplished today.  For the past week I've had quite a bit of homework, and today load finally started to get smaller.  I'm sure I'll get more in the next couple of days, and I still have plenty to do tomorrow, but it's nice to be done with so much of it.

I also have a theology test tomorrow that I'm hoping goes well.  I'm a bit nervous about it, but I think this one will be better than the last.  There are less lists of things to remember and that's what I struggled with last time.

With all the work I've done today, it definitely doesn't feel like Monday.  I feel as if it should at least be the middle of the week by now.  Hopefully the week will go by fairly quickly.  I have two call-out meetings to go to for clubs this week too.  I'm hoping those will go well, and I'll decide to stay in both.  I think one of them may conflict with history club though, so we'll see how that goes.

Live While We're Young

One Direction's new single, Live While We're Young, came out several days ago, and I have not been able to stop listening to it.  It got leaked a few days early (and the officially released it soon after), so it was completely unexpected.  I knew it was going to be officially released while I was in class, so I was so excited to get out of class and watch it.

I was slightly nervous that I wouldn't like it because what would I do if I didn't?  I've become so wrapped up in the One Direction fandom lately (which is rather unfortunate considering the drama), and I definitely wanted to like the new single.  And believe me, I did like it.  I absolutely love it.  I'm obsessed.  I've watched it so many times that I've lost count.  When my family surprised me by showing up here on Saturday, I was spending time with them and away from the computer.  At one point at the Indianapolis Children's Museum, I actually took my mom's phone (since mine was dead) and watched the music video because I hadn't gotten to all day.  (Don't get me wrong.  I like spending time with my family.  I just really wanted to watch the music video.)

I've already calmed down quite a bit when it comes to how much I watch it.  (I'm down to 3-5 times a day.  I watched it over twenty times the first day.)  I'm sure I'll reach a point soon where I'm not dying to watch it every single day.  I do absolutely love the song and the music video though.  I can't wait until I hear it on the radio.  I don't listen to the radio that often, so I haven't yet (although that's how my sister heard it for the first time).  This has just made me even more excited for the new album.  I can't wait to hear all of the other new songs from it!  It seems so far away from the album's release, but hopefully the wait will go by quickly.

Wondering What Everyone's Doing

My family surprised me this morning by just randomly showing up at my college to visit.  It was great to see them, but that's not really what I want to talk about in this post.  While we were eating dinner, we started talking about what some of my old classmates are up to.  Most of the kids we talked about were my old high school classmates, but we started talking about all the kids I went to elementary and middle school with too (some of who attended the same high school but not all).

It was odd to think that we've all gone our separate ways.  I could remember where most of them are going to school now, but I have no idea what most of them are studying.  A few of them I couldn't even think if they were going to college, working, or what they were doing at all.  Oddly enough two of the people that I couldn't think of what they were doing were two of my old best friends.  I probably had the hardest time trying to remember what they're up to.  I know what one of them is studying, but I can't remember where she's going.  And even though I talked to the other one more often in high school I realized that I don't have a clue what she'd doing now that we've graduated.  I'm debating if I should send them a message on Facebook just asking how things are going for them.  They used to be my best friends, and I'm interested in seeing what they're up to.

In a broader sense though, I'm curious as to what all of my classmates are up to.  I should really start spending more time on Facebook.  I used to avoid it because of all the school drama, but hopefully that'll be better now that we've graduated.  I'm friends with younger kids who are still at my old school, but I'll just avoid that drama as best I can.  I follow some of my old classmates on Twitter, but so many of them don't have Twitter accounts.  I'm not friends with a lot of my old classmates on Facebook either.  Maybe I should go and add some more.  I don't know if that would be weird or not.  I'm just insanely curious about what everyone's doing now.  It's only been four months since graduation, but it kind of feels a lot longer than that.  I'm already looking forward to the reunions...

I Love Netflix

A week or two ago my mom told me that they'd gotten Netflix.  She didn't realize at the time that I could actually watch it on my computer by logging onto their account.  I was so excited because I'd been begging my parents to get Netflix for years, and now they finally had.  I haven't watched a whole lot on it so far, but I'm so happy about it.  There are a few movies I want to see that aren't on instant queue, but the majority of them are.  There are so many movies I've wanted to see for a long time and never got to the theater or anything, so I'm really happy that now I have a way to watch some of those.

I've been using it to watch How I Met Your Mother, and I've watched two movies.  I watched TiMER which was a movie I wanted to see when it came out who knows how long ago, but it was on limited release and didn't come out where I live.  I enjoyed it, and it was cool to finally see it.  I also watched Camp Rock, which I'd seen before but years ago.  I found it on Netflix, so I figured why not.  I don't really think it's that bad as far as Disney Channel movies go.  Sure it's a little bit cheesy, and I found a few plot holes, but that's pretty typical for a Disney Channel movie.  I still think it's enjoyable.  (Plus, I'm a Demi Lovato and Alyson Stoner fan, so I might be kind of biased.)

I'm really enjoying having Netflix though.  It's awesome!

Thoughts on Crushes

Do you ever look back on the crushes you had in elementary and middle school?  For some reason I think about it every so often.  In elementary school I only had two crushes, and each one of them lasted for years. Then, I had two major crushes over the course of middle school that lasted a while, but I had a ton of little crushes as well.

When I got to high school crushes became a much smaller part of my life, thankfully.  Not that I didn't still get the occasional crush, but most of them were on celebrities and I didn't feel the need to talk about them 24/7 like my friends and I did when we were younger.  (Although, that may not be entirely true anymore considering how much I talk about One Direction...)

I really don't know what point I'm even trying to make here.  It's just interesting to think about how my views on crushes and boys have changed over the years.  It's a bit odd thinking about what the boys I liked back in elementary school are like now, and how my friends and I used to giggle about them and everything.  I have one very interesting (but somewhat long) story about my friends and I trying to discretely tell let a boy know that one of my friends liked him.  We weren't discrete at all, and looking back on it my passed self should have been way more embarrassed at the time than I was.  There was also the time when Summer told a boy I liked him, and then he proceeded to go, "I know who you like" all day long until I finally just gave up and confirmed that I liked him.  It sounds somewhat embarrassing, but even at the time I found it more hilarious than anything because of the way it happened.

I just have so many memories about stuff like that that are interesting to think about, and none of it is how I would handle things today.  Crushes back then were so much fun, although I probably wouldn't have said that at the time.  Back then they seemed like a very serious thing, but looking back at it now, it was all so innocent and fun.  The crushes my friends and I had over the years led to a lot of great stories and memories.  I kind of miss those days.

Superpowers

The second day I was here at college they had this playfair thing.  Playfair is so hard to describe, so I'm not even going to try.  We did a ton of different stuff, but one of the things was partnering up with random people and answering questions to learn more about each other.  One of the questions we had to answer in one of these groups was what superpower we wish we had.  I was with two people, a boy and a girl.  Once the question was asked the other girl and I immediately answered, and the boy was like, "Wow, you guys have actually thought about this..."  And then he had to sit and think a while about his own choice.

I never thought it was odd that I knew what my dream superpower would be.  I've known for years that I'd become invisible if I could.  That probably has a lot to do with my personality, but I also just think it would be cool.  (Although when Pottermore asked the question they included talk to animals as one of the options, and I was a bit torn.)  I'd love to be able to become invisible and just roam around places without people knowing I'm there.  I really have no desire to spy on people or anything like that.  (I mean, I'm not going to lie and say that I never would, but it's not even close to being one of the main reasons I'd love to have that superpower.)  I'd just like being able to become invisible and wander around without people watching me every so often.

What superpower would you want to have?

Nine Months Until the One Direction Concert!

I know I've gone on about the One Direction concert I'm going to with my friend Haley in June multiple times in various places online already, but this is going to be yet another post about it.  I just need somewhere to release my fangirling...

For those who don't know, my friend Haley and I bought One Direction tickets a few months back for a One Direction concert in Louisville that isn't until June 2013.  I'm beyond excited, and I think the large amount of time I have to wait is only making me more and more excited.  It was probably about a week ago that I texted Haley about my excitement because it was just so bad at that particular moment that I had to talk to her since she's obviously the person who understands.

It's just hard for me to believe that in about nine months I'll be in the same building as One Direction.  I would have a hard time believing we were even in the same city.  Sure Haley and I aren't likely to get close to them at all, but just seeing them in real life, no matter how far away they are, seems surreal.

I don't know how I'm going to be the next nine months as I suspect the excitement will only get worse the closer it gets.  By the time I'm at home for the summer, I expect I'll be talking about it all the time.  It won't help that, being at home, I'll be able to see Haley more, which will remind me of the concert even more.  We're going to have so much fun!

Making Friends and Joining Clubs in College

For a while at the beginning of school I honestly worried that I'd never make friends here.  I'm happy to say that almost a month into school I'm no longer worried about that.  I haven't made a ton of really close friends, but every day I meet more and more people.  I'll never be particularly close to any of these people, but I've got a large group of people now that I at least know and am friendly with.  They're people that I say hi to when I pass them while walking around campus and I can sit down with when I see them at events.  It's good to know that I have at least a couple of good friends now and even more people that I can call friends, even if we're not particularly close.

Today was the call-out meeting for history club.  I went with Claire, and it was so much fun.  I'm definitely looking forward to being a part of it, and the meeting only helped lessen my fears of not making friends even more.  The group was on the smaller side (which is a positive for me), and everyone there was great.  I'm really looking forward to the rest of the year.  I now belong to two clubs, and tomorrow I'll find out about even more at the activities fair.  I'm not sure how many I'll join.  We'll see how tomorrow and the first meetings go.  So far things are looking pretty good though.  I'll probably never be an incredibly social person with a huge group of friends, but I'm feeling pretty good about things now.

Foreign Films

Today we began watching a French film in my history class.  It's older, although I have no idea how old exactly, and has subtitles.  This is the only time I've ever seen a subtitled foreign movie.  All of the others I've seen were dubbed (and consisted of Godzilla and martial arts movies that I never actually paid attention to).  Sure I watched subtitled anime on a regular basis, and I even watched the Ouran High School Host Club live drama subtitled, but that doesn't seem like the same sort of thing.

For some reason a lot of people see watching foreign subtitled films as something only certain people do.  The have this stigma as being deeper or harder to understand (in a figurative sense as they really are in a literal sense to English speakers) than American films.  Truthfully, there's absolutely nothing different about this film than old American movies I've seen other than that it's in French and I have to read the subtitles to know what they're saying.  It's not really all that difficult to read subtitles, so why do foreign films have this stigma about them that makes people seem almost afraid to watch them.  You're not really watching anything all that different from an American movie except you have to do a little reading.

Fall is Coming

The whole waking up earlier every single day, even weekends, was working so well for a while.  I didn't feel tired at all, but the past couple of days I've felt so tired.  I think it's because my allergies are getting bad because of the weather changes, and it's making me feel worse.  Still, even with my allergies being a pain, today was a pretty good day.

Today was cool enough that after taking the trash out this morning I decided I was going to change out of my shorts and put on jeans.  We had my absolutely favorite kind of weather today.  The temperature was perfect.  It was the kind where you can wear either jeans or shorts if you really want to and not be horribly cold or hot.  I love this weather, and I hope it stays around for a while.

My roommate's family took my roommate, another of my roommate's friends, and me out for lunch today.  I'm so glad the other friend was there otherwise I would have felt pretty awkward though.  It was nice though, and they were really nice people.  We went to Buffalo Wild Wings.  It was nice to finally eat there after I've heard people talk about it so much.  I really enjoyed it, so I can understand why people love it so much.  I started feeling really sick afterwards though, so I don't know if I'll ever want to eat there again.  I don't think it was the food's fault, but I'll always have that association in my head, sadly.

Thankfully I was feeling better by dinner, so I managed to eat up in the dining hall.  I just happened to randomly bump into Jill and Claire there, so we talked for a while and were even joined by a couple other people.  Eating alone has ceased to bother me, but it's still nice to sit with other people every so often.

I'm off to go read.  I'm currently reading the fourth book in the Star-Crossed series.  If you've seen my reviews of the first three books you'll know that I love this series, and I'm loving the fourth one just as much. I'm in the last fourth of the book, and I'm so excited to read the ending!

Oh, and I didn't post yesterday, but it was this blog's third birthday!  (And also my sister's 17th birthday!)  I can't believe I've been blogging here for three years!

Books Becoming Movies

There are quite a few movies that I want to see that are based on books.  I usually want to read the book first before seeing the movie though.  There are quite a few movies out based on books that I have yet to either read the book or see the movie.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower movie is coming out soon.  I've been planning to read that book for quite a long time and have yet to get around to it.  Emma Watson and Mae Whitman (the voice of Katara in Avatar: The Last Airbender) are both in it though, so I have to get around to reading that book so I can go see the movie.

The first Mortal Instruments movie is being filmed right now.  I own the first book but haven't read it yet.  There's actually a bit of controversy with this one involving a fanfiction Cassandra Clare wrote before and people accusing her of plagiarism.  I'm not entirely sure I should read it, but I'm probably going to cave and at least read the first one to see how I feel about it.

I own the books Beastly and Red Riding Hood as well but have yet to read either book or see their movies. I really need to get around to reading both of those since those movies are already on DVD.

There are plans to make a bunch of books I have on my to-read list into movies even though production hasn't even started on those yet.  (Matched, which I also own but haven't read, is one of those.)

I feel as if there are a lot more books being made into movies these days.  I don't know if that's just because I'm paying more attention or because it's actually happening more.  I'm not complaining though.  I love seeing books become movies.  I just wish I was better at getting around to reading the books and seeing the movies quicker.

Movies I Only Saw Because of School

There were quite a few different movies that I watched in school growing up, and I can't remember most of them.  A lot of them were movies I'd seen before (some of them many, many times), but there were also quite a few I'd probably never have seen if I'd never watched them in school.  When you have a class of students you're obviously going to have a group of people with a wide variety of tastes in movies, so I've watched quite a few movies I definitely did not want to watch.  (I wouldn't have seen half of the sports movies I have if it weren't for school.  I'd never seen Coach Carter before starting high school, but by the time I graduated, I'd seen it at least five times.)

There were two movies that I watched in high school that I never would have watched otherwise, but I ended up absolutely loving.  The first one was The Prestige.  We watched it in my sophomore chemistry class for some reason.  (I can't remember why she let us watch a movie...)  I thought I was going to absolutely hate it at first.  It didn't sound like something I would like at all, but I'd now consider it one of my favorite movies.  I loved it.

During my junior year we watched Schindler's List while studying the Holocaust and World War II in U.S. history.  (I remember everyone being excited about watching an R rated movie in school when we were taking the permission slips home.)  I wasn't as worried about liking this one as I had been The Prestige, but I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did.  As much as I love history, I'm not a war movie person, and a movie about the Holocaust didn't seem like it would be much better.  That movie is amazing though.  I feel like it's a movie everyone should watch.  I'm pretty sure everyone in my class loved it.  My sister's taking AP U.S. history this year, and I really hope they get to watch it.  I took the AP class last year, and we didn't get to watch it because of lack of time, so who knows.  (My school only started offering AP U.S. history last year, so I hadn't had the opportunity to take it junior year.)

Review:

My reviews for Reckless Magic and Hopless Magic.

Time

It's weird to think that it was only four years ago that I started high school.  That was so scary and intimidating at the time, and now just a short time later I'm in college.  Five years ago I was still in my last year at St. Bernard, and ten years ago I was in third grade.  It's kind of weird to think like this, but fourth grade is currently about the halfway point of my life so far.  I don't even know where I'm going with any of this, but it's strange to think about.  In another ten years I'll have less than a year until I'm thirty.  That's scary.

I'm going to end this pointless rambling that makes absolutely no sense here.  I'm off to go be an awesome college student and sit in front of my computer and watch the Beauty and the Beast DVD special features (there are just some things time doesn't change).

A Lazy Labor Day

I have done basically nothing this entire weekend.  That's not really surprising considering that's usually how things are for me.  There's hardly been anyone on campus since it's Labor Day weekend, and it's been raining almost non-stop the entire weekend.  I've just been in my dorm most of the time.  And walking to the dining hall in the rain is not fun.  I'm not looking forward to that for the rest of the year.

I've spent a large part of my day watching the special features on the Beauty and the Beast DVD.  I still have some to get through, and then I'm going to try and work on some homework.  I got everything that's due in the next couple of days done, but I want to go ahead and get more done for whenever I get even more homework tomorrow.

It's weird thinking that tomorrow will be the start of the third week of classes (or is that today even though it's Labor Day?).  It doesn't feel like I've been here that long, but then again it kind of does.  I guess it's good that I feel that way since it probably means I'm adjusting to everything.

Book Review: Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis

ISBN: 0064471055
Published: 1994 (first published 1951)
Publisher: HarperCollins
Read from August 27th to 31st, 2012
Synopsis from Goodreads:
A prince fights for his crown. Narnia... where animals talk... where trees walk... here a battle is about to begin. A prince denied his rightful throne gathers an army in a desperate attempt to rid his land of a false king. But in the end, it is a battle of honor between two men alone that will decide the fate of an entire world.
Review:

This book seemed to go by so much faster than the other Narnia books.  I know I read it quicker than I did The Horse and His Boy, but even The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (which I read in one day) didn't feel as quick as Prince Caspian did to me.  I'm not trying to say it was bad though.  It just seemed as if everything moved really quickly.  Everything happened in a short period of time, and you can tell when you're reading the book.

When I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe I was picturing the movie in my head the entire time, but even though I've seen the Prince Caspian movie I realized while reading the book that I couldn't remember anything about the movie other than the very beginning and the very end.  It's probably because I only saw the Prince Caspian movie once compared to the millions of times I've the other one, but I'm also wondering how faithful the Prince Caspian movie was to the book because I feel like the book should have brought some memories of the movie back and it didn't.

I really enjoyed the book though.  For some reason I just really love Aslan, and I'm not even sure why.  I just love him even more every single book.  I guess that's good and kind of the point since he's the godly figure.  It was interesting to see Narnia who knows how many years since the previous books.  I'm looking forward to getting around to reading Voyage of the Dawn Treader soon.
