Movie Review: Despicable Me

Synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes:

My review:

Before watching this movie the only thing I really knew about it was that it was about some villian that hate cute, little minions.  That was all I could remember seeing in the previews, so I had no idea what the plot even was.  This really had nothing to do with the movie itself though.

I thought the movie was adorable.  The minions are cute and hilarious, and I love Margo, Edith, and Agnes.  The whole story was really sweet, and there were a lot of hilarious moments in the movie.  I really enjoyed it.

I Love Documentaries

I wanted to post a blog today because it's been a while since I've posted one on Sunday because of different things happening.  The problem is, the day I finally write a post on Sunday, I have nothing to really write about.

All I've done today is go to church, watch TV, surf the web (I really hate that expression), and read.  I did watch this really interesting documentary on Air Force One on the National Geographic Channel.  It was really neat.  I just wanted to mention that.

If you're a Harry Potter fan, you may have heard that there's a poll to pick the Blue Ray cover for Deathly Hallows Part 1.  It's on the Harry Potter UK facebook page, so it's probably just for the British edition.  I don't live in Britain, and I don't own a Blue Ray player, but I voted anyway.  I think it's a really cool idea to have the fans vote.  I just wish it was for the American DVD cover, so I could actually buy the one that wins.

Today is awesome because I watched the awesome Air Force One documentary.  (I'm such a nerd.)

Harry Potter Reread: I'll be caught up when I read chapters 2 and 3 of PoA tonight!

Secret Tunnel

(I only used that title because it reminds me of the secret tunnel song in the Cave of Two Lovers episode of A:TLA.  Although, this post does briefly mention a tunnel even if it's not very secret.)

My friend Ji was over for most of the day today.  I woke up at about 11:30 this morning, and she was over at about 1:30 and stayed until about 9:00.  Most of that time was spent working on a take home test for AP biology.  Those tests always take forever, but this one was even longer than usual.  It probably didn't help that we kept getting distracted and talking.

After we finished our tests, we decided to go rent a movie.  We were picking out a movie when my phone started ringing.  It was my sister.  She'd called to tell me that I needed to be at our church when mass ended to sell pizzas.  That gave me about half an hour until I needed to be there.  We're helping sell pizzas to pay for our mission trip this summer.  I'd agreed to sell tonight and then completely forgot.  Luckily, Ji and I had time to get the movie and stop at my house to drop it off before we headed over to my church.

We got there a little early.  If you know how a Catholic mass goes, we got there during the Eucharist.  Ji and I went to sit at the table in the back where I was supposed to sell pizzas.  Ji isn't Catholic, so she was asking me a bunch of questions while mass was ending.  I think she felt nervous about being there.  There were a fair amount of people watching us as we came in.

We ended up selling about five pizzas, and then we headed to the sacristy where my dad was putting the chalice and other things away.  (The sacristy is the back room of the church.  It's where things such as the priest's vestments are kept.  A chalice is the cup that the wine/Blood of Christ is in during mass.)  My dad is usually the sacristan at our church, that means he makes things are ready for mass and puts things away at the end.  After my dad was done, we headed over to the chruch office, so my dad could put the collection money in the safe.  My sister Regina and I had fun showing Ji the underground tunnel that connects the church office building with the actual church.

Once we got back to out house, Ji and I watched Despicable Me.  I'll probably write a review of it tomorrow.  After the movie, Ji left, and I haven't really done much since.

I kind of feel like this became a sort of Catholic education post towards the end.  That gave me more to talk about then anything else that happened today though which isn't usual for mass.

Today was awesome because I spent most of it with an awesome friend, Ji.  Plus, we sold some pizzas to help pay for the mission trip that I'm incredibly excited for!

I Love Reading (If That's Not Obvious)

I haven't done much today other than read which, in my opinion, is a great way to spend a Saturday.  Although, all day I've kept thinking it's Sunday (probably because of the two snow days on Thursday and Friday).

I finished reading James Potter and the Curse of the Gatekeeper.  I posted a really short review over on Goodreads.  I chose not to post a review here since it's basically just a fanfiction in ebook format.  I enjoyed it though.  If you're into Harry Potter fanfiction, I'd definitely recommend reading it.

If you watch my Youtube videos or follow me on Twitter you'll already know this, but I decided to mention it here too.  I finally updated my Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfiction.  As I mentioned in the author's note (and various times on Twitter and, I think, Youtube) chapter 21 gave me a ton of trouble, but it's finally up.  Now, I only have one more chapter and an epilogue to write, and it will be finished!

I also posted a (very, very) short Harry Potter fanfiction.  It was written for a challenge, and I had no idea what to do for it.  I just started writing and it came out.  It's extremely strange in my opinion, but it's only five paragraphs, so it's not a huge waste of anyone's time I guess.  It only has one review, and they thought it was hilarious which I honestly wasn't expecting.

Today is awesome because I found out that the Deathly Hallows Part 1 DVD is coming out April 11th!  I'm so excited!  I can't wait!

Book Review: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Synopsis from Goodreads:

"The tragic story of the complex bond between two migrant laborers in Central California. They are George Milton and Lennie Small, itinerant ranch hands who dream of one day owning a small farm. George acts as a father figure to Lennie, who is a very large, simple-minded man, calming him and helping to reign in his immense physical strength."

Review:

I'll admit I wasn't too excited about this when my English teacher told us we'd be reading it.  I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it though.  I don't really have much to say about it other than the ending was so sad!

I think this is a classic that everyone should read.

We're watching the movie in class, so I'll probably write a review of it later.

This book was read for my English 11 Honors class.  The copy I read was borrowed from my high school.

Rewatching Inception

I woke up at 10:00 this morning.  Do you know the last time I did that on my own?  Without and alarm clock or anyone else waking me up?  I can't even remember.  It was so strange...

My friend Ji came over today.  We got an AP biology take home test to do this weekend that we're allowed to work together on, so we did that.  It took us at least two hours.  Those tests are long!  When we take them in school, it's seperated into two different days.  I'm always so relieved when I finish one because it's always so mentally exhausting.

After that we went to rent Inception.  I think I mentioned last week that Ji went with us to rent it last week, but she wasn't able to stay and watch it with us.  She really wanted to see it, so that's how we spent another few hours.  I was right about it being less confusing the second time around.  I definitely think it made a lot more sense this time.  I might actually understand what happened.

Right after Ji left I made chicken quesadillas.  I found the recipe earlier this week and told my mom I wanted to make them.  I used to be obsessed with reading recipes, and I was always wanting to cook them.  That wore off eventually but taking foods this semester has kind of brought it back.  I told my mom I wanted to do this completely on my own which I've never really done before.  I've always had someone helping me whether it be my mom, grandma, or the kids in my class at school.  That didn't really happen though.  My mom hovered over me practically the whole time.  Still, I managed to do almost everything on my own, and I think they turned out pretty good.  I even made salsa to go with them.  We didn't have peppers though, so it wasn't at all spicy.

Book Review: Astronomy for Dummies by Stephen P. Maran, PhD

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Review:

I think this is a great book for people who want to learn more about astronomy.  The author definitely knows what he's talking about.  Maran is a recipient of the NASA Medal for Exceptional Achievement, as stated on the front cover of the book.

Maran makes every thing easy to understand.  I don't think anyone would get confused.  There are parts of the book that get a little technical, but he uses a little symbol, so you can skip those parts if you wish.

As I took an astronomy class at my high school earlier this school year, I already knew most of the information in this book, but I still found it very interesting.  Even if you think you know the "basics" of astronomy, I'd still encourage you to read it.

However, this book was published in 2005.  Astronomy, and science in general, can change a lot in five years, so there were several things that would now be considered errors.  For example, Pluto is still considered a planet.  Hopefully, a new edition will be published soon (maybe it already has) that will fix those errors.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has any interest at all in learning about astronomy.  Whether you want to work for NASA some day or you're just slightly interested in space, this would be a great book for you.

Movie Review: Letters to Juliet

Synopsis:

"When a young American travels to the city of Verona, home of the star-crossed lover Juliet Capulet of Romeo and Juliet fame, she joins a group of volunteers who respond to letters to Juliet seeking advice about love. After answering one letter dated 1951, she inspires its author to travel to Italy in search of her long-lost love and sets off a chain of events that will bring a love into both their lives unlike anything they ever imagined."

Review:

I thought this was a really cute movie.  If you're into chick flicks than I think you'd like this.

I mean, it has a very predictable plot, but so does pretty much every romance movie ever made.  I loved the characters though.  Except Victor, I didn't like him so much.

This film made me want to go to Italy even more or anywhere in Europe really.  I think it would be kind of cool to write a letter to Juliet even though I don't really have anything to write about.  Plus, I'm not a huge fan of Romeo and Juliet.  In fact, Juliet annoys me more than Bella Swan does when it comes to romantic situations, and that's saying something.

Anyway, I really liked this movie and would definitely recommend it to any girls that enjoy romance even if it is extremely predictable.

Movie Review: Inception

Synopsis:

"In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a single idea within one's mind can be the most dangerous weapon or the most valuable asset."

Review:

Let me just start off by saying that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of my absolute favorite actors of all time.  I'd probably watch anything if he was in it.

You should probably also know that I have trouble paying attention to movies when I watch them at home.  I get too distracted by other things.  So, at the beginning of the movie I was paying extremely close attention.  By the end though, I was paying really close attention.

I really enjoyed the movie although I was a bit confused.  My sister tells me this was because I wasn't paying close attention, and I'm sure she's right (which doesn't happen often).  I still enjoyed it though and was able to make sense of most of it.  I'll probably watch it again in the future and try to understand it better.

I'd definitely recommend watching it if you haven't.

I Have a Maurader's Map!

Today has been a strange day.  That can probably be contributed to my lack of sleep last night.  Why do I stay up extremely late when I know I'm going to have to get up in the morning to go to church?  I don't know.  I really don't

Speaking of church, my phone began ringing twice during mass.  What really gets me is that I'm absolutely positive it was on silent each time.  I vividly remember turning it on silent.  I hate my phone.

The person calling was my friend Ji.  We'd made plans for her to come over today, and she hadn't realized we were still at church.  We had a lot of fun.  She came over to work on homework together, but we had a lot of fun once we finished.

We had my sister play Apples to Apples with us which is probably one of the funniest games ever.  It's even funnier when you're extremely tired like I was.

I showed Ji my Harry Potter Film Wizardry book.  I still hadn't really looked at it since I'm trying to get through all of the other books I'm reading first.  I was incredibly happy to find a Maurader's Map inside.  I kind of freaked Ji out because I yelled in shock and happiness right into her ear.  She thought it was funny, but she doesn't understand how happy I am that I have a Maurader's Map.  If only the people actually moved.  Hopefully, I'll remember to show it in tomorrow's video.  I have a feeling that book is going to get an extremely good review from me.

My sister had the idea to go rent a movie.  Ji drove us there.  I'm still not used to the idea that people my age drive.  I should be considering almost every friend I have drives now, but I'm not.  I wish I wasn't so terrified of driving.

Anyway, back to renting movies.  We got Inception and Letters to Juliet and haven't watched either one yet.  Ji had to go home right after we got them.  She was going to come back later to watch them with us, but her mom said it was too late.  I hope I have time to watch both of them tomorrow before they have to be taken back.  I don't think I'll get to them tonight.

After posting about book reviews in yesterday's post, I thought of some other things.  I've now decided that I'm going to review both movies and fanfiction in the same way.  That means there will hopefully be reviews for both Inception and Letters to Juliet up tomorrow.  Movie reviews probably won't come often.  I love movies but don't see new ones all that often.

As far as fanfiction reviews go, they'll probably be more frequent.  I've decided to only review completed fanfictions though.  It makes things easier I think.  I don't want to review something that isn't finished and possibly won't be finished.  If you have a fanfiction you wish for me to review, please feel free to let me know.  I'm only going to be reviewing fanfictions for the fandoms I'm in though.  This means that most of the fanfiction I review will be Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Avatar: The Last Airbender since I read those the most.  I do read Twilight fanfiction on a somewhat regular basis, but almost every single one is centered around the werewolves (usually Jacob's pack).

Today is awesome because my sister made Jello.  You have no idea how long it's been since I've had Jello.

Frodo Isn't in The Hobbit! (Plus, Some Blog News and Other Rants)

When I look back on today, it seems both like I got a lot done and didn't get anything done at all.  I know that sounds weird, but it's true.  I did a lot of stuff, but none of it was the stuff I was planning to get done today.  So I don't know whether today would be counted as successful or not.

While cooking egg rolls for my lunch earlier today, I burnt myself on the pan.  I now have a decently sized red mark on my left pinky.  It doesn't really hurt unless it touches something even remotely warm or it rubs against something.  I hope that goes away soon.  It's pretty annoying.

Two things kind of distracted me today from getting anything done.

First, I'm sure at least most of you heard about the shooting in Arizona.  It's absolutely horrible.  If you haven't heard, the shooter even has a Youtube page.  I was curious, so I checked it out.  He has videos about mind control and stuff.  The guy is definitely crazy.

I really don't like how people are going off an all of the parties and everything though.  I think the map on Palin's site was horrible, but I've seen some people blaming everything on the Tea Party or the Republican Party which I don't think is right.  It's not any party's fault.  The guy's obviously psycho.  I don't want this to become controversial though, so I won't say anything else.

The second thing, some of you may have heard of Kenneth Tong.  He's more popular of in Britain I think.  He was on Big Brother UK.  Anyway, he has a twitter, and his marketing a new product.  It's called Size 0 and it's a kind of "dieting" drug or something.  It's supposed to be "managed anorexia."  The whole thing is disgusting.  He's saying that if you're above a size 0 you're ugly which the most idiotic thing in the world.  Here's one of his tweets: "A pop star chose to tell the world everyone is beautiful because of my Tweets, to be beautiful in your own way is to be ugly in every other."  The pop star he's refering to is Rihana.  He tried to get her to support him, and she refused.  She's been posting stuff on her twitter against it.  She's not the only celebrity to do so either.

All day people have been posting stuff.  That tweet I posted isn't even close to the worst.  He's saying so many stupid, horrible things.  I don't even get how people can be so horrible.  I also looked up some videos on Youtube of when he was on Big Brother.  He is not a good person.  He also says that the perfect guy is rich.  I can't believe this.  I think it's only a matter of time before his drug is made illegal.  He says it's safe, but there is absolutely no safe way to starve yourself.

EDIT: He has since said on his Twitter that this was all a hoax.  He was apparently doing an "experiment."  Either way I think it's still absolutely horrible.

So yeah, part of the reason I got next to nothing done today was because I was spending all of my time on Twitter watching those two things unfold.

In movie news, Elijah Wood has been confirmed as part of the cast in The Hobbit.  It's probably a good thing that no one was around when I found that out.  I am not happy.  How are they possibly planning to put Frodo in The Hobbit!?  Ugh, he's not supposed to be there!  I can't believe they're doing this.  This, along with the rumors that Orlando Bloom is also coming back, just makes me dread this movie.  I mean, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood are both awesome actors, but they need to stick to the book!

(Elijah Wood is also apparently going to be in a new Treasure Island mini-series.  Why am I mentioning this?  Just so I can say that I absolutely hated that book.  We read it in 7th grade.  The whole book seemed like complete gibberish to me.  I didn't understand anything that was going on.  Not even in the movie.)

Sticking to movies but moving on to The Hunger Games, why does everyone seem to think it needs to be rated R?  The director said in an interview that they were aiming for a PG-13 rating, and I think that sounds good.  Yes, tons of people die, but I think they can do that and still make a PG-13 film.  I think it would be better that way.  It's based on a YA novel, more young adults would see it if it was PG-13.

You may have noticed to new things over on the sidebar.  I'm now a member of Book Blogs (which is just a group for people who blog about books) and a host for Virtual Book Tours.  The second one is more interesting I think.  In the future, you'll be seeing guest posts by and interviews with authors.  Most of the authors will be YA authors, but you'll probably see some from other genres as well.  They'll be promoting their books.  I think it will be exciting!

I am also going to change things a bit with book reviews.  In the past, I've reviewed books inside of another blog post or in a Youtube video.  Now, all of the books I review will be reviewed on this blog, and the review will be a blog post all on it's own.  I'll have a summary of the book and then my review.  I will probably also include a link where you can buy the book on Amazon in case anyone's interested.  I may have free books sent to me in the future for the exact purpose of reviewing them (nothing is certain yet though).  I'll mention in the review whether I bought the book or was given it by the publisher.  Either way, the review will be my honest opinion.

Even My Subconscious Dreads School

I had the strangest dream last night.  It's a testament to the fact that I hate going back to school in that I always have a horrible dream about school in the week before we go back.  This time we missed school in the dream.  It started of okay.  We (my brother, sister, and I) woke up on time and were ready.  Then, as soon as we're about to go out the door, I glance at the clock and it says 10:30.  Apparently time just magically sped up.  We had no idea what to do.  We'd obviously missed the bus, and our parents weren't there to take us.  Besides, school had been going on for hours by now.  We ended up walking around town freaking out.  My dad ended up waking me up before the dream was over because I overslept for church.  It scared me a little though.  Yes, I got very freaked out over missing school.

I know it's the second day of the year, but I really started using my new Harry Potter planner/engagement calendar/whatever-you-want-to-call-it today.  I'm writing down stuff after I do it too.  Haha.  I know that's not the point, but I think it will be cool to look back on that a year from now.  I know I have this blog and my Youtube videos too, but I don't always put everything on here either.

The Harry Potter Alliance started their next horcrux today.  This month is the Body Bind Horcrux.  They explain it better than I can, so you should check it out here.

I'm trying to do a million things at once, so I'm going to go now.  Here's one last thing though.  I took a quiz last night to find out what type of dog I am.  Here's the result:

I'm not sure how I feel about it.  I mean, it would be cool to be a movie star and everything, but I don't think this really fits me.

It's 2011!

Happy New Year's Day everyone!  I hope your year is off to a great start.

I spent New Year's Eve at my grandma's with all of my cousins on that side of the family.  We had a lot of fun.

We hung these things from the ceilings as part of the decorations.  It took forever to hang them all up.  I hung about three up, and then got my cousin Ben to hang the rest up.  It was actually pretty funny because we were all following him around, pointing out places to hang them.  As soon as it seemed like we were almost done hanging them up, someone would find more sitting somewhere.  Ben kept saying that, if any of them fell down, he wasn't putting them back up.

They looked pretty cool, but everyone kept running into them.  At least, us taller ones did.  The things that tangled from the bottom (some had stars, some the words "Happy New Year," and some didn't have anything) were at just about eye level for me, and I never seemed to notice them until right when they hit me in the face.

After an hour or so, some of my cousins started talking about putting music on.  Somehow, talking about what music to listen turned into what movie we should watch.  We ended up watching The Lord of the Rings:  Fellowship of the Ring on Netflix.  All of us loved the move except my grandma, who'd never seen it, and my sister Regina, who didn't even get there until the end of the movie.  We'd planned on watching all three of them that night, but that didn't end up happening.  We didn't even finish the first one because it started raining and the Netflix instant thing had to keep trying to find a signal.

We opened last year's time capsule.  I'd put in some of my writing.  It was chapter six of Avatar: The Next Generation to be specific.  I'd also drawn all over the back of the pages.  I hadn't realized how much I'd written of A:TNG this year until then.  Chapter six was the most recent chapter last year, so that means, I wrote fourteen chapters of the course of the year.  I'd wanted to finish the story this year, but I'm hoping I can still get it done by the end of January.

I put in some more of my writing this year.  I put in An Early Christmas Present, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and chapter twenty of Avatar: The Next Generation.  I also added this drawing of a creature I did earlier that day for some game we played earlier in the day.  I uploaded some pictures onto Twitpic of that.

At midnight, we threw around a ton of confetti that ended up making a huge mess.

I (and everyone else) got next to no sleep last night.  I can barely keep my eyes open as I type.  I think I'm going to sleep really well tonight.

My mom picked my sister and I up at about 1:30.  We'd only been up a couple of hours at that point.  I haven't really done much since I got home that's worth mentioning.

I did put up my new Harry Potter calendar up.  I also wrote in my Harry Potter engagement calendar for the first time.

Oh yeah, and I watch this documentary on the Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway DVD about the closing of Rent on Broadway.  It made me a little sad especially when it showed some of the actors crying at the end.
